Ian
We were in the fortunate position of being able to design a new house with the aid of an architect around a heat pump. We have now lived in the house for nearly 9 years and have been really pleased with the way the heating has kept the house at a comfortable 18 to 21 degrees C each winter at a reasonable cost.
The system installed was a Daikin Altherma 6 Kw heat pump together with a Daikin Altherma 300 litre hot water cylinder. The ground floor has under floor heating divided into 6 zones controlled by 6 fully programable thermostats. The 1st floor heating has a programable thermostat controlling radiators each fitted with thermostatically controlled valves.
I believe the key to making the best use of the efficiency of a heat pump is to install high quality insulation within the house including walls, floor, roof, windows and external doors. Once the required ambient temperature is achieved then very little energy is needed to keep a constant temperature due to only small heat losses.
I will be pleased to talk to anyone in the village about heat pumps and the need for high quality thermal insulation in houses where they are to be fitted.
