Across the UK, communities are already leading the way in creating local heat networks and renewable energy solutions. These projects don’t just cut carbon—they spark economic opportunity, build local resilience, and bring neighbours together around a shared purpose.

 

These are just a few of the community energy projects that have been an inspiration to the Neat project team including some who have been very supportive in helping us along the way with their knowledge and experience.  

Swaffham Prior Heat Network (Cambridgshire)

A pioneering rural heat network helping residents transition from oil to a hybrid heat pump system powered by solar. The project is supported by Cambridgeshire County Council and is now fully operational.

Stage: Up and Running

Ambition Lawrence Weston (Bristol)

A resident-led development trust, charity and social enterprise founded in 2012. ALW was created to deliver a Community Plan shaped by over 1,200 residents, aiming to tackle local social and economic challenges and generate long-term income to improve lives.

Stage: Up and Running

Bishop's Castle Heat and Wind project (Shropshire)

A community-led project in an off-gas rural town, aiming to deliver a renewable heat network powered by wind, solar, and heat pumps. Supported by Lightfoot Enterprises and Shropshire & Telford Community Energy. 

Stage: Planning application process

Grantchester Heat Link (Cambridgeshire)

A rural village project currently in feasibility stages, exploring the potential for a community heat network

Stage: Feasibility Phase 2

Heat Upper Hayford (Oxfordshire)

A community-led initiative working toward a low-carbon heat network for a growing rural village location.

Stage: End of Phase 2 with provisional planning approval 

Grand Union Community Energy. (Hertfordshire)

Projects include solar car park canopy, heating for Kings Langley, and broader energy planning for Southwest Hertfordshire.
